Miracle Train

Next week, the 2nd Annual Tour de Light Rail snakes it’s way through downtown Phoenix and Tempe. Ever since the Light Rail has come into existence, there have been pub crawls along this new line. With it’s proximity to nightlife and a multimillion dollar party train at your disposable as DD, hosting a pub crawl is not an original, nor difficult, idea. This one, however, is very different.

Created by Lennox Punch, the first thing that differentiates this from all the other pub crawls is that one-hundred percent of the proceeds go to charity. This is not some bar promotion in the traditional sense, or a specialty showcase of some sort. All though bars do get massive traffic and exposure! This is about getting bodies – a lot! – out to have a great time, while at the same time trying to capture that sense of happiness and goodwill, and turning that into dollars to those who need it most. It’s no secret that a lot of things are falling by the wayside during this tough recession In these trying times, every penny is going to number-one. And there is nothing wrong with that. Survival is paramount. However, things like the arts and philanthropy have taken a hit. Plato once wrote, “Necessity, who is the mother of invention.” If that’s the case, then creativity is her daughter. And this Tour de Light Rail is a wonderful example of all those forces coming together.

When Stefanie Punch, wife of the organizer, was asked what her favorite memory was of that event, she said, “ I got to see the project go from an idea to an actual event. The fondest memory I have from the night is just seeing the idea come to fruition. It was rewarding to see Lennox’s hard work all come together!”

Lennox, who has a brother living with hemophilia and is also a board member of the Hemophilia Association, said, “To me, [The Tour de Light Rail] represents the creativity and innovation that’s needed to be
success[ful] in fundraising in the non-profit sector. Every non-profit charity has a golf tournament but not too many can say that they have a pub crawl.”

And that in-turn is the true miracle that is The Tour de Light Rail. Sure it’s one of the largest attended pub crawls in the valley. Sure no other pub crawl offers as many events, live music, and giveaways. Sure you’re guaranteed to have a great time with friends, both new and old. But being part of an event that addresses the need of the community, while simply enjoying oneself is what it’s really all about. Who knew that having a great time could be so beneficial to our brothers and sisters in need? Join us on September 18th, and not only witness this wonderful event, but be a part of it too.

  1. WOW! what a great idea. I have done a few pub crawls through meetup.com and I’ve even had to pick up a few people from these events as a designated driver..
